Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement in Bloomingdale

After a cold night the door stays open until the garage warms up.

In plain words

By the end of the visit you have a door that closes from every control and reverses the instant the beam is broken, a sensor pair mounted level at the right height with steady indicator lights, wiring that is secured and out of harm's way, and a written note of what was found and what was changed. The technician walks you through the two tests you can repeat monthly, points out which light is which, and leaves the opener's diagnostic chart where you can find it. It is a small job that puts a large piece of your door's protection back in service.

Sound familiar?

You press the remote, the door drops a few centimetres, then climbs straight back to the top while the opener light blinks. Nothing is under the door. It has done this every evening this week.

How the visit goes

  1. Ruling out sun, frost and reflections

A sensor that misbehaves on a timetable is usually being blinded rather than broken. The technician notes which way the door faces, where the low sun reaches the floor in the morning and late afternoon, and whether a receiving lens looks into that light or into a reflection off a parked car, a white wall or fresh snow. Lenses are checked for frost, condensation and a film of salt, common in an unheated garage. A hand cupped over the receiving eye while the light is watched is a simple test: if the indicator settles when the eye is shaded, the fix is a side swap or a small hood rather than new parts.

  2. Resetting the alignment

Alignment is done with the door open and the lights in view. The technician sets both sensors to the same measured height, loosens the wing nut on the receiving side, and turns the sensor a fraction at a time until its indicator changes from dark or flickering to steady. The nut is tightened while the light is watched, because a sensor can drift as the fastener bites, and the sending side is treated the same way. Brackets are checked for play and the wire is re-clipped so it cannot tug the sensor out of line. A steady light on both sides, held through a few door cycles, is the standard.

  3. Two lights to glance at

You leave knowing what normal looks like at the floor. Most sensor pairs carry a small indicator on each side, often in different colours for sender and receiver, though some older pairs light only the receiver; the model's own chart tells you what steady and flickering mean. A dark or flickering light on the receiving side means the beam has been lost, usually because a bracket was bumped or something is in the path, and two dark lights mean the pair has lost power along the wire. A glance at those lights before calling anyone tells you most of what the technician would look at first, and often the fix is moving whatever is leaning on the bracket.

What affects the quote

  1. Number of doors

Each opener has its own sensor pair and wire run, so a double garage with two doors is two sets of checks, two possible pairs and two rounds of testing, quoted per door.

  2. Corrosion reaching the head unit

Where salt and water have travelled up the wire to the terminals, or the sensor terminals on the board are damaged, the repair extends beyond the pair and that is set out separately.

  3. Sun and reflection remedies

Swapping the sensors side to side is a small addition when the wiring reaches. Fitting a shade, or extending the wire so the receiver can move, is a little more and is listed on its own.

What to have ready

  • Can you send photographs of both sensors, the head unit label and the wall control?
  • Does the opener light flash when you press close, and how many times?
  • Is there frost, snow, slush or salt around the sensors in winter?

Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement: questions

Questions
Could the wiring be the problem rather than the sensors?

Frequently. The sensors are fed by a thin two-conductor wire from the head unit that crosses the ceiling and drops down both sides of the door, and it is pierced by staples, cut by shelving screws, chewed by mice or pulled from its terminals more often than a sensor fails. Both sensor lights dark, or an opener code for an open or reversed circuit, points to the wire. The technician tests the run with a meter and repairs or replaces the damaged section.

How high off the floor should the sensors sit?

Low. The industry checklist expects the beam no more than roughly 15 cm (6 in) up from the floor, so that a small child, a pet or a bicycle wheel breaks it. Both sensors are set at the same measured height and level with each other, since a difference of a couple of centimetres is enough to lose the beam. Within that rule the technician can raise them a little to keep them out of the strip where slush collects.

Will my phone app or hub still work after the sensors are changed?

Yes. The sensors are wired to the head unit, and the app or hub simply talks to that unit, so nothing about the connection changes. What you will notice is the fault code clearing: apps that reported the sensors as obstructed or not aligned show the door as ready to close again. If an app or hub still holds an old code after the work, refreshing it or cycling the door from the app once clears it.
